Speaking Out

Wow -- where did the time go? I recently referred to my "somewhat neglected" blog because I knew it had been a while since my last post. I won't ask for forgiveness (I was raised Catholic so the phrase "it has been X months since my last post" harkens back to confession), and I'm pledging to myself to appear here more often.

There's a blogger you should know about. Her name is Yoani Sanchez and her Generacion Y blog at www.desdecuba.com/generaciony chronicles life in Cuba. The Wall street Journal featured her recently on the front page (Weekend edition 12/22/07, Cuban Revolution) and of course what they were thrilled about was her anti totalitarian (read pro capitalism) message. My Spanish is not good enough for me to catch the tone of her message or evaluate its political bent.

I'm impressed by her story, by how she manages to blog by posing as a tourist to enter internet cafes in international hotels in order to get around Cuba's restrictions on Web access. She brings her content on a flash memory drive and uploads as quickly as possible because the $3 she pays for a half hour is nearly a week's wage for many Cubans. She writes honestly and with humor about life in Cuba, "Stalinism with congo drums," and faces the danger of arrest by using her name and posting a photo. She says, "One of the first things we have to do, a great way to begin to change, is to be more honest about saying what you think."

Even if jailed, she says she would find way to blog. "You have to believe that you are free and try to act like it. Little by little, acting as though you are free can be contagious." To freedom!!
