Pursuing Passion

I saved the Job Market section of the Seattle Times from November 18, 2007 because of the front page article about the Pursue the Passion project (http://pursuethepassion.com ). The brainchild of Brett Farmiloe, the project gathers stories and advice from people in the work force about career choice, finding passion in your work, and how to find your life's calling. I knew there was something I wanted to say about the project but it's taken me months to tease it out. Something about Pursue the Passion reminds me of my More than a Paycheck workshop, and that something is vaguely dissatisfying, like the nonfat version of a dish you really love. It comes down to this: You can talk about passion and read about passion and write in your journal about wanting more passion in your work and ask other people how they found passion in their work, but until you take a risk and actually reach for passion for yourself, it's all talk and no, well, passion.

So I'm recommitting to reaching for and reconnecting to the passion myself in order to be a better resource for others when I teach More than a Paycheck. Reaching for the latest book or article that outlines the formula helps but is not enough. Gathering advice helps but is not enough.
