Barriers to happiness

At the Samarya Center where I practice yoga a couple of times a week -- love that lunchtime vigorous class! -- there's a monthly focus highlighting an element of yoga philosophy. This month's focus is the 5 barriers to happiness (there's a Sanskrit name too which I'll ask about at the next class). "Only 5?" I thought when the instructor announced the new monthy focus. I was pretty sure I could come up with a much longer list. And then I realized that my list is actually much shorter -- the same old 2 or 3 things over and over again -- work, weight, worrying about being a good parent...

Here's the Yoga list of barriers to happiness. Does this jive with your daily dance with happiness? What's your list? What barriers to happiness can you lower in your relationship with work?
  • ignorance (especially of the self)
  • ego
  • aversion
  • attraction
  • fear

Hmmm, I am going to have to really think about this. Thank you for posting. I think my barriers to happiness of late are a basic feeling of out-of-controlness.

For instance, when I decided to go to yoga class this morning (first time in WEEKS), I couldn't find my yoga mat.

Must be symbolic of something.....
